Pennies for PeaceI recently read “Three Cups of Tea” written by Greg Mortenson which was the inspiration for me to start Pennies for Peace –Santa Cruz. He is the founder and director of the Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace. I have started a local Santa Cruz based Pennies for Peace Campaign. This is a way to help the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan; especially the children get an education, and potentially help us get one step closer to world peace. As a frustrated American against the war on terror I have chosen this penny collection project as a way for me to take action in a positive manner. This is a hopeful and inspiring way to help bring about social change in an area that needs our help. Pennies for Peace Santa Cruz started January 11 2008 and will collect pennies until April 4th 2008. Please contact Amy Impellizzeri 831.227.1911 or to find out where to donate your pennies. The following information is taken from the Pennies for Peace and Three Cups of Tea website: Our best hope for a peaceful and prosperous world lies in the education of all the world’s children. Through cross-cultural understanding and a solution-oriented approach, Pennies for Peace encourages American children, ultimately our future leaders, to be active participants in the creation of global peace. Pennies for Peace teaches the rewards of sharing and working together to bring hope and educational opportunities to children in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A penny in the United States is virtually worthless, but in Pakistan and Afghanistan a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. Remember, when pennies add up they can make a real difference:
Central Asia Institute Mission: The mission of Central Asia Institute (CAI) focuses on community-based education, especially for girls. A 5th grade education for girls improves not only the basic indices of health for her and her family; she will also spread the value of education within her community. Literacy, for both boys and girls, provides better economic opportunities in the future and neutralizes the power of despot mullahs and other extremist leaders. In 1993, Greg Mortenson, founder and executive director of Central Asia Institute, and Pennies for Peace was weak and ill after attempting to climb K2, the world’s 2nd highest mountain. On the trek home he befriended a couple men from Korphe village. After recuperating in Korphe for many days, he noticed there was no school. Before returning home, he made a promise to help the community construct a school. After 3 years of difficult fundraising, construction of the school was completed in 1996, making Korphe Community School the first school in the Braldu valley. As of 2007, Greg Mortenson has established over 61 schools in rural and often volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, which provide education to over 25,000 children, including 14,000 girls, where few education opportunities existed before. Greg Mortenson advocates girls’ education as the top priority to promote economic development, peace and prosperity, and says, “You can drop bombs, hand out condoms, build roads, or put in electricity, but until the girls are educated a society won’t change”. Believe in yourself and that you can make a difference in the world. More info:
